Watertown's Lesbian History
Since the mid-1800s, Watertown has been home to a surprising concentration of lesbian communities. Watertown resident Robin Bernstein, a cultural historian and professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Harvard, will share images and artifacts from sculptor Harriet Hosmer, Helen Keller's circle of lesbian admirers, and Persephone Press (with an emphasis on the publication of This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color).
Robin Bernstein is the Dillon Professor of American History and Professor of African and African American Studies and Studies of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Harvard University. She has lived in Watertown since 2006.
