Watertown Race Reels Series: Unspoken

Organization or Program title:
Watertown Race Reels Series: Unspoken
Room:
Watertown Savings Bank Meeting Room
Program Description:
Watertown Race Reels provides a common experience, through short (~70-80 minutes) documentary films about race and ethnicity (different racial/ethnic identities will be explored each month). In providing a common experience through short films Watertown Race Reels provides a jumping off point for conversations around race that are difficult to start and develop an audience/community that embraces discussion around racial and ethnic identity, the impact of racism on our community members and our community as a whole, and goal oriented actions to make our community more aware and welcoming of differences. After viewing each film, community members, young and old, gather in a circle to meet with speakers, directors, or relevant citizens to ponder the issues raised by the film. In honor of Indigenous Peoples day this month Watertown Race Reels will be screening the documentary UNSPOKEN. The film UNSPOKEN "takes a moving and insightful look into the history, operation, and legacy of the federal Indian Boarding School system, whose goal was total assimilation of Native Americans at the cost of stripping away Native culture, tradition, and language." This month, Watertown's own Thalia Carroll-Cachimuel will join Watertown Race Reels as our guest speaker for post film discussion. Thalia is an Indigenous and Latinx human rights advocate working at the intersection of integrated marketing and social justice. She is the Communications Manager on the When We Fight, We Win! team and sits on the Board of grassroots and frontline-led organization The Truth Telling Project. She is a recent alumni of the Fellowship for Emerging Leaders in Public Service at NYU Wagner, was an Indigenous History contributor for Learning for Justice, and is currently working on the case to free Indigenous political prisoner, Leonard Peltier.
